Centennial Celebrations

Recognized as the world’s first environmental agreement and a model of binational governance, the 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty continues to guide the Governments of the United States and Canada in their joint stewardship of transboundary natural resources. The legacy of progressive cooperation and the priceless shared waters for which the Treaty was negotiated will be the focus of the Centennial Celebration of the Boundary Waters Treaty to be held at Niagara Falls on June 13, 2009.

Niagara was one of just two areas specifically mentioned in the 1909 treaty, it is only fitting that we return to this location to recognize 100 years.

Celebrations will include:

  • Official ceremony at the international boundary on the Rainbow Bridge
  • Centennial Stages at Oakes Garden Theatre (Ontario) and Prospect Point (New York)
  • Distinguished environment speakers
  • Commissioned performances and compositions
  • Roving receptions
  • Trails, hikes and paddles exploring Niagara’s secret wonders
  • Falls fireworks finale
